Soap Adds Lightning Payments Through Voltage

Soap merchants can now offer Lightning through their existing checkout, giving customers another way to pay with compatible wallets and apps.
Adding a payment method should create more opportunities for a business without creating another infrastructure project.
Soap has integrated Voltage to bring Lightning payments into its unified checkout. Merchants can offer Lightning as an opt-in payment method through the platform they already use, while Voltage provides the infrastructure behind it.
For us at Voltage, this is what practical Lightning adoption looks like: a payment company responding to merchant demand, with a new payment option that fits into its existing product.
Built Around What Merchants Were Asking For
Soap's merchants wanted more ways to accept payments, including payment experiences available through apps such as Cash App. But sending each merchant through another direct provider onboarding process would add complexity.
Integrating Lightning at the platform level gives Soap a way to support compatible wallets and apps through one open payment network.
Merchants continue managing checkout and payment operations through Soap. They don't need to operate Lightning nodes, manage payment channels, or build a separate payment backend.
That matters because a new payment method is only useful if businesses can put it to work.
How the Payment Works
The customer experience is straightforward:
- A customer selects Lightning in Soap checkout.
- Soap generates a Lightning invoice, presented as a QR code or a supported deep link, depending on the device and checkout experience.
- The customer reviews and completes the payment using a compatible Lightning-enabled wallet or app.
Soap manages the checkout and merchant workflow. Voltage supports the Lightning infrastructure behind the transaction.
The integration builds on Soap's hosted checkout, iframe, and payment-method button experiences, bringing Lightning into the ways merchants already offer payments.
Customers May Not Need to Own Bitcoin
Lightning's open network allows different wallets and apps to pay the same type of invoice. That creates room for customer experiences that make the underlying technology less visible.
Cash App's Bitcoin Payments with USD is one public example. Eligible Cash App customers can scan a Lightning QR code and fund a payment from their USD Cash balance without needing to hold or spend bitcoin.
The customer uses a dollar balance, while the payment travels over Lightning. Their funding choice is separate from the merchant's settlement arrangement.
Cash App is not a party to the Soap and Voltage integration. Its product illustrates why open-network compatibility matters: businesses can accept Lightning while customers choose an eligible wallet or app that suits them.
Soap Owns the Experience. Voltage Handles the Lightning Infrastructure.
A successful payment launch requires more than adding a checkout button. The infrastructure behind it needs to support payments reliably as usage grows.
Voltage Payments provides the APIs, liquidity management, and operational support for sending and receiving payments over Lightning. Soap retains control of its merchant relationships, compliance processes, checkout, and customer support.
This lets each company focus on its role. Soap delivers the payments experience its merchants need, and we handle the specialized Lightning infrastructure supporting it.
Bringing Lightning Into Everyday Checkout
Soap's launch shows how Lightning can become part of an established payments product. Merchants gain another payment option within a familiar platform, and customers gain another way to complete a purchase.
The Lightning payment option is now available through Soap. Together, we'll support merchants with educational content and share what we learn as adoption grows.
For other payment companies considering Lightning, Soap offers a useful example: start with what your merchants need, build the payment flow around their existing experience, and put the right infrastructure behind it.
